Soil inorganic carbon is one of the main carbon banks in the near-surface environment, playing a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Research has shown that inorganic carbon sources such as bicarbonate and carbon dioxide can influence the growth and adaptation of autohydrogenotrophic denitrifying bacteria.

In this study, three distinct strategies were applied to feed carbon sources to autohydrogenotrophic denitrifying bacteria: continuous sparging of CO2, bicarbonate plus continuous sparging of CO2, and only bicarbonate. The results showed that bicarbonate as the only carbon source resulted in a faster adaptation rate, while carbon dioxide as the only carbon source or as a complementary carbon source added to bicarbonate led to longer acclimation periods.

The pH-reducing nature of CO2 was found to have an unfavorable impact on denitrification rates. However, bicarbonate provided a buffered environment and maintained the pH in the desirable range of 7-8.2. This highlights the importance of inorganic carbon molar mass in creating a suitable environment for microbial growth and activity.
